Weaning Isn’t Just About Food: Building Positive Mealtimes From the Start

  1. Weaning Is More Than Food
  2. Letting Go of Pressure
  3. Why Mess & Exploration Matter
  4. Creating Positive Mealtimes
  5. Taking It Slow & Getting Support

When we think about starting solids, it’s easy to focus on what our baby will eat. First foods, textures, allergens, schedules - it can quickly feel overwhelming!

But one of the most important things to remember is this: weaning isn’t just about food.

It’s about building a positive relationship with food from the very beginning - helping our babies learn that:

● Food is safe

● Eating is relaxed

● Mealtimes are a shared, enjoyable experience

Letting go of pressure

So many parents feel pressure to make sure food is going into their baby. We see images of empty plates online and, without realising it, start tracking every mouthful - adding stress to an already full mum brain.

But in the early stages of weaning, eating is about exposure and experience, not quantity. Breast milk or formula remains your baby’s main source of nutrition throughout the first year. Solids are complementary - a chance to taste, touch, smell, and explore.

Your baby doesn’t need to finish portions or eat on cue. They need time, safety, and space to learn.

Let mess be part of the learning

One small but really important reminder I often share is this: you don’t need to wipe your baby’s face after every spoonful.

It’s tempting, especially when food is literally everywhere, but constantly wiping your baby’s mouth or face during a meal can create a negative association with eating. For some babies, it can make mealtimes feel intrusive or stressful.

Instead, let them be messy. Let food sit on their cheeks, their hands, even their eyebrows!

Mess is part of learning. It’s how babies explore texture, temperature, and movement. When we step back and allow mess, we let them know that eating is fun.

Items for positive mealtimes

Creating a supportive, enjoyable eating environment is often overlooked, but it is an essential part of weaning well. A few simple items can make mealtimes easier for you and more comfortable for your baby.

A supportive highchair: Choose a chair that allows your baby to sit upright and feel secure. Look for:

● An adjustable footrest

● Good back support

● Easy-to-wipe surfaces (especially important for us mums!)

Baby-safe dishes & utensils: Soft-tipped spoons and shallow bowls or plates help your baby:

● Explore food

● Practise self-feeding

● Feel successful - even with tiny amounts

A bib that catches mess: A long-sleeve or deep-catch bib can save lots of laundry while keeping your baby comfortable.

Easy-clean mats or seat covers: A washable mat under the chair or a wipeable seat can really reduce mealtime stress.

A small cup: Even early on, offering a small cup with a little water supports:

● Oral skills

● Independence

● The importance of hydration

A calm, shared table environment: This isn’t something you buy but it is essential. It helps your baby focus on the meal rather than becoming overstimulated and distracted.

● Turn off loud noise or the TV

● Remove distracting toys from their eye sight

● Sit directly in front of your baby

● Make eye contact and model relaxed eating

These small touches let babies know that:

Mealtimes are calm. Mealtimes are safe. Mealtimes are about connection.

Take it slowly and trust the process

Weaning is not a race. There’s no prize for the baby who eats the most or starts the earliest.

What matters is that your baby feels safe, supported, and free to explore food in a way that suits them - and that you feel calm and confident along the way.

It’s easy to get stressed, plan foods perfectly, and do hours of research. But for your baby, the most important thing is being with you, feeling connected, and having fun.

You’re allowed to enjoy this too.
